History of the Company
Dakota Farm Mutual Insurance Company is a statewide farm mutual insurance company doing business in South Dakota since 1886. In 1999, in order to provide better services to members and in an attempt to reduce costs, Dexter Farm Mutual Insurance Company merged with Deuel County Farm Mutual. Under this merger, the Companies now do business statewide under the name Dakota Farm Mutual Insurance Company. In June 2000, the Douglas Farm Mutual Insurance Company and in January2005, the Hutchinson Farm Mutual Insurance Company were merged into Dakota continuing the companies expansion and presence in South Dakota.

Reinsurance
Dakota Farm Mutual Insurance Company uses Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company (GMRC) for reinsurance.

Grinnell Mutual's roots can be traced back to the mid-1800s. As settlers moved to the Midwest, they sought protection from the ravages of prairie fires. Working together, these pioneers banded together to protect each other. They discovered that working together was necessary for survival. When fire struck, neighbors pitched in to help with labor, materials or money. There was no thought of profit; it was a way of people helping people.

From there, the concept of spreading the losses of a few amongst the many grew. The mutual system flourished and developed into efficient modern business organizations serving their counties and adjoining areas. In 1909, a State Association meeting called for the need of a reinsurance organization for the county mutuals-and the company now known as Grinnell Mutual was created.

Today, Grinnell Mutual operates in 12 states throughout the Midwest, reinsuring nearly 300 mutuals, and achieving a 53% market share. In addition, Grinnell Mutual employs over 700 dedicated individuals, making it the largest employer in Poweshiek County.
